We get many unique questions on our TubeFed Facebook Page every day. From time-to-time, we’ll feature real questions asked by some of you and share the answers to help us all learn from each other.
This month, we’re featuring a question about dying the MIC-KEY* G Feeding Tube (from Mary W).
Question: The new craze is dyeing MIC-KEY* feeding tubes with food coloring and vinegar. Will using vinegar change the integrity of the tube material?
Answer: Thanks for your question, Mary! Using vinegar and food coloring to dye MIC-KEY* G Feeding Tubes is outside of our approved labeling for the product and inconsistent with the MIC-KEY* Feeding Tube Use & Care Guide. Avanos wouldn’t recommend or endorse taking this approach to add “color” to the feeding tube. While there’s some concern about the high concentration of acetic acid (vinegar), we don’t know for sure if the practice is detrimental to the product without further testing. Currently, all we can say is that it’s certainly not something that we would recommend or advise caregivers and/or consumers to do.
