Whether you’re celebrating an event or it’s just your average week night, gathering for a meal with friends or family is a tradition in countries around the world. Just because you or a loved one doesn’t eat orally, doesn’t mean you can’t participate in meal time. As the holidays are approaching quickly, we’ve put together 3 ways to include the feeding tube-user (or consumer) in your life in these special moments.
- Give Them a Job: Whether it’s setting the table, preparing a certain dish or clearing the plates after the meal is over, consider a job that you or your loved one may enjoy and assign the task. Chances are, they will be happy to contribute and will appreciate being included.
- Help with Preparations: Feeding a group, especially on a holiday, can be a huge task. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Ask your loved one if they would mind assisting you with the meal planning, grocery shopping, decorations or other tasks around the house before the big event.
- Keep the Conversation Going: Delicious food is an important component to a great meal, but the memories that typically stick with us the most are the conversations we have and the company we’ve shared it with. While conversations among friends and family often flow with ease, you may want to come to the table with a few topics in mind. For example, have everyone share what they are thankful for on Thanksgiving or what their most memorable moment of the year has been so far.
