Dating with a Feeding Tube:
Building Confidence and Connection

Medically Reviewed by Shana Vold, RD, LD, CNSC, Enteral Feeding Specialist

Dating can be a rollercoaster of excitement, nerves, and curiosity—no matter who you are. When you have a feeding tube, it can bring a few extra thoughts to the mix. You might wonder when to mention it, how someone will react, or if it will change how they see you. But the truth is, your feeding tube doesn’t define your worth or your ability to connect. It’s simply one part of your story.

Confidence really does set the tone. When you feel at ease with yourself, others will too. Your feeding tube is just part of how you take care of your health, not the headline of who you are. Try to focus on what makes you you—your humor, your interests, your kindness. Those are the things people remember and fall for.

If you’re going on a first date, plan something that feels natural and fun. Your day doesn’t have to revolve around food. Consider non-food dates like walking in the park, an art show, a concert, or a movie night. The goal is to connect and enjoy each other’s company. If you do choose something food-related, it’s okay to share what makes you comfortable. Most people will appreciate your openness and go with the flow.

When it comes to talking about your feeding tube, do it in a way that feels natural to you. There’s no need for a big reveal or detailed discussion unless you want to have one. Mention it when the time feels right and move on to what really matters—the person, the connection, and the moment you’re sharing.

Above all, remember that dating is about connection, not perfection. You deserve relationships that make you feel seen and valued for all that you are. The right person won’t be put off by your feeding tube—they’ll admire your strength, honesty, and the way you own your story.

Love doesn’t require hiding any part of yourself. It grows best when you show up fully — tube, confidence, and all.
