Ava’s Guide to Staying Hydrated With a Feeding Tube

Medically Reviewed by Laura Urias, MCN, RD, CSO, LD, Registered Dietitian
Hi friends! It’s your pal Ava, here to wag my tail and help you learn all about staying hydrated when you use a feeding tube. Even though your formula is liquid, it doesn’t have all the water your body needs. Your body still needs extra water to feel great, play hard, and stay healthy!
Why Water Matters
Water helps your tummy work smoothly, keeps your kidneys happy, and gives you energy for all the fun things you love to do. When you don’t get enough water, you might feel tired, dried-out, or even a little cranky.
That’s why it’s super important to talk with your doctor or dietitian. They’ll help make sure you’re getting just the right amount of water each day.
How Do You Know If You Need More Water?
Here are some clues your grown-ups can watch for:
- Thirsty much? Feeling extra thirsty might mean your body wants more water.
- Dry lips or mouth. If they feel sticky or dry, it could be a sign.
- Warm, dry skin. Your skin might feel hotter or less soft than usual.
- Dark pee. If your urine looks dark or smells strong, your body may need more fluids.
- Feeling off. Fever, fast weight loss, or just not feeling like yourself can also be signs.
Things That Can Make You Lose More Water
Some days your body uses up water faster—like when you’re playing outside, running around, sweating, or when it’s super hot. Throwing up, diarrhea, or a high-output stoma can also make your body lose extra fluids.
If any of that happens, your grown-ups should let your care team know.
What To Do If You Might Be Dehydrated
If you’re sick for more than a day—like if you’re throwing up, have diarrhea, or a fever—make sure your grown-ups talk to your doctor.
Each day, your grown-ups can help keep track of:
- How much formula you get
- How much water you get
- What your pee looks and smells like
Your doctor or dietitian can help adjust how much water you need so you can stay comfy and hydrated.
Remember, staying hydrated helps you feel your best so you can keep playing, learning, and shining bright. And I’ll be right here cheering you on with happy tail wags!
