Happy Mouths, Bright Smiles!

Hi friends! Let’s talk about something super important—taking care of your mouth, even if you get your food through a feeding tube. You might not eat by mouth, but your mouth still needs care every day. Keeping it clean helps you feel comfortable, keeps your smile healthy, and can even help your whole body stay strong!

When we don’t brush, tiny sticky germs build up on our teeth. This sticky layer is called plaque. If plaque stays too long, it hardens into something called tartar, which is tough to remove and can make your gums sore or bleed. People who are tube-fed can get more tartar because their mouths don’t do as much chewing to help clean away plaque.

That’s why it’s so important to brush your teeth at least twice a day, for about two minutes each time. Use a soft toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste to help protect your teeth. If toothpaste feels uncomfortable, ask your dentist if brushing with just water is okay.

Sometimes, people with feeding tubes feel like their mouth is dry because they don’t make as much spit (saliva). You can keep your mouth and lips comfortable by using a gentle, water-based gel or by staying well hydrated.

Even if you don’t have teeth, your gums and tongue still need gentle cleaning! Use a soft brush or a clean, damp cloth to wipe your mouth. And if you wear dentures, take them out at night to clean and dry them before using them again.

Don’t forget to visit your dentist, too! They can help keep your mouth healthy and give you tips that fit your needs. Remember, your mouth may not chew, but it still deserves lots of care and attention. Brush, rinse, and smile bright—because every smile is special! ✨
